On this International Women’s Day, we recognize a few of the change-makers and groundbreakers who inspired us most this year. In an empowering moment where women are changing the conversation and reinventing the wheel, we honor those Women who are using their platforms to shape our future, and encourage all to do the same.
It goes without saying that Rihanna is the epitome of a BOSS, but she has also proven herself to be a fearless business woman; breaking the mold in the fashion and beauty industries. Tired of outdated and unattainable beauty standards set forth by only businessmen, she has created an empire, better known as Fenty, that is inclusive to all women. Her inaugural lingerie show featured women of all shapes, sizes, ages, and ethnicities, and her celebrated makeup line is one that finally meets the needs of all skin tones and identities.
Stacey Abrams is a woman who defines the idea of never giving up. Having been defeated in an unjust gubernatorial race during the 2018 midterm elections, Abrams refused to concede without a fight, showing us that sometimes taking no for an answer just isn’t acceptable. While she may not have gone on to become Governor of Georgia this time around, she taught us an important lesson about defending ourselves and our communities. She also delivered an awe-inspiring response to the State of the Union address last month which gave us a voice and reminded everyone that Stacey Abrams isn’t going anywhere, and empowering the next Stacey Abrams to step up.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has become somewhat of an overnight celebrity in Washington. This is not just because of her refreshing and youthful energy or huge social media presence, but because she is never afraid to use her voice and express her strong beliefs. AOC’s most recent public cause has been The Green New Deal, finally forcing the desperately needed conversation about climate change. AOC is defending much more than her personal beliefs, she is defending our future.
Happy International Women’s Day to all the ladies out there, and may you feel empowered each and everyday.
